Presented by J2RC Dances, “Rigor & Risk” offers a winter afternoon salon experience featuring music, literature, art, and dance, in the style of French salons from the 17th and 18th centuries, often held in the reception rooms of large houses. Audience members would enjoy arts presentations, share ideas, and engage in discussion with artists. Honoring this tradition, our salon explores two challenging parallel aspects of the creative process. Discipline and labor (rigor), essential to creating meaningful art, necessarily intersect with the vulnerability (risk) implicit in performing and presenting this work to an audience. In the spirit of the intimate and informal salon setting, generous arts patrons will host the concert in their private venues.

National Book Award winner Julia Glass will read from a novel in progress and share passages from other works. Pianist Eleanor Ruggiero Gilbert will play Bela Bartok’s demanding “Six Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm” while visual artist Rhonda Miller paints live. All these art forms will occur in concert with the choreography of artistic director Jennifer Uhl as danced by Ameia Mikula-Noble. It is our hope that the juxtaposition of these diverse creative expressions will stimulate questions from audience members in conversations with the artists themselves, held at intervals between the prelude, interlude, and postlude sections of the presentation.

“AGAIN AGAIN in Dance and Film” performed at the Foundry in Cambridge, on December 8th, 2024 at 2pm.

AGAIN AGAIN in Dance and Film, presented by J2RC Dances, includes modern dance and film works from artists Peter DiMuro / Public Displays of Motion, Nicole Lombardi, Liv Lopez, Ameia Mikula-Noble, Meredith Price, Holly Stone and Artistic Director Jen Uhl. It offers a variety of artistic works broadly related to the concept of repetition. This sense of repetition embodies itself via time passing (sometimes several decades), variations unfolding, unfinished projects reemerging and discovery of new revelations from revisiting past work again – and again. This performance results from the creative work of seven artists collaborating and documenting work this fall. AGAIN AGAIN incorporates modern choreographers, modern dancers and videographers from a wide array of perspectives including the LGBTQIA+ lens. Peter DiMuro / Public Displays of Motion presents the short film “The House of Accumulated Beauties” from his year as the 2018 inaugural choreographer-in-residence at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
